Start by finding out why your laptop is slow
The safest way to speed up a slow laptop is to diagnose the likely bottleneck before deleting files, installing “cleaner” software, or changing advanced settings. Start by closing applications you are not using, restarting the computer, checking storage and resource use, reviewing startup programs, and installing appropriate operating-system updates.
For Windows PCs, Microsoft lists limited storage, excessive startup/background activity, outdated software, and aging hardware among common causes of poor performance. Microsoft also recommends checking CPU, memory, and disk use rather than assuming one fix will solve every slow computer.
On a Mac, Activity Monitor shows which processes are consuming CPU and memory. Apple's Memory view also provides a Memory Pressure indicator, which is more useful than treating unused RAM by itself as a problem.
A useful first test is simple. Restart the laptop, open only the application that normally feels slow, and observe it again. If performance is normal after a restart but gradually worsens as more programs open, background applications or memory pressure may be part of the problem.
Check storage before installing anything
Low available storage can contribute to poor performance, and both Windows and macOS include built-in storage-management tools. Microsoft provides Storage settings and Storage Sense for temporary files, while Apple provides the Storage view under System Settings on supported macOS versions.
Review large files before deleting them. Downloads, old installers, videos, unused applications, and local copies of material already backed up may be reasonable candidates. Do not blindly delete unfamiliar operating-system folders.
On a current Mac, go to System Settings > General > Storage. Apple notes that this path applies to macOS Ventura 13 and later.
On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft also provides controls for temporary files and Storage Sense.
Before removing personal files that cannot be replaced, confirm that your backup actually contains them.
Reduce unnecessary startup activity
A program that launches every time you sign in can consume resources even when you are not actively using it.
In Windows 11, open Task Manager > Startup apps and review programs configured to start automatically. Microsoft recommends disabling startup apps that you do not need to launch with Windows.
On current macOS versions, use System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions to review items that open at login and apps allowed to perform background work.
Do not disable an entry merely because you do not recognize its name. Search the software vendor's documentation first. Security software, accessibility software, device utilities, synchronization services, and workplace management software can have legitimate background functions.
A safer approach is to change one or two obvious nonessential items, restart, and test again. That makes it easier to reverse the change if something you need stops working.
Use Windows Task Manager or Mac Activity Monitor
When the laptop slows down, check what is happening during the slowdown.
On Windows, Task Manager can show CPU, memory, and disk activity, helping you identify applications that consistently consume substantial resources. Microsoft includes resource monitoring in its current performance-troubleshooting guidance.
On a Mac, Activity Monitor provides CPU and memory views. Apple documents Memory Pressure as an indicator of how efficiently available memory is meeting current demand.
Do not automatically force-quit every process near the top of the list. Some system processes legitimately become busy for short periods. Instead, look for a pattern: one application repeatedly consuming heavy resources while the laptop is slow.
If a single third-party program is consistently responsible, update that application, reduce the workload inside it, or check the developer's support documentation.
Install appropriate operating-system updates
Updates can contain bug fixes, security fixes, drivers, and compatibility changes. Microsoft includes Windows Update among its first performance troubleshooting steps.
For Windows 11, use Settings > Windows Update and review available updates. Microsoft also documents optional driver updates where applicable.
For macOS, Apple recommends using the latest macOS version compatible with the Mac for security, stability, and compatibility. Apple's current route is System Settings > General > Software Update. Apple also advises backing up the Mac before installing new software.

Consider malware when a Windows PC slows down unexpectedly
A sudden unexplained slowdown can sometimes be associated with malicious software. Microsoft states that malware can consume CPU and disk resources and recommends running a Windows Security malware scan as part of its PC performance checklist.
On Windows 11, Microsoft currently directs users to Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection for the relevant scan controls.
Avoid downloading an unknown “PC booster,” registry cleaner, or security utility simply because an advertisement says your machine has hundreds of errors. Use operating-system tools and reputable vendor documentation first.
Know when optimization will not solve the problem
Software changes cannot make aging hardware infinitely faster. Microsoft notes that older hardware may not improve significantly from software troubleshooting alone.
Repeated high memory pressure, insufficient storage capacity, poor battery condition, thermal problems, or applications whose requirements exceed the computer's capabilities may justify a hardware assessment.
Before buying components, confirm that the laptop model supports the proposed upgrade. Some laptops do not have user-replaceable memory or storage. Use the manufacturer's documentation or an authorized repair provider rather than assuming a generic upgrade guide applies.
For Windows users, note that Microsoft's free Windows 10 security-update and technical-support period ended on October 14, 2025. A machine that cannot move to a supported platform requires a broader security and replacement decision, not merely a speed tweak.

Use this sequence instead of making many changes at once:
Restart and retest. Check storage. Observe CPU, memory, and disk activity. Review startup items. Install appropriate updates. Scan Windows PCs for malware where warranted. Retest after each change. Then consider application-specific, hardware, or professional-support options.
That sequence does not guarantee a faster laptop, but it helps identify the cause while keeping changes easier to reverse.
